Barron
County Democratic Party
Cecil Kippenhan, Chairman
Subject: A Call to Action
July 20,
2005
Dear Barron
County Citizens,
During
the last election, we did our part and won the state of Wisconsin
for John Kerry and the Democratic ticket. We lost the election
nationally but we are far from defeated.
Republicans
are still aggressively pushing their agenda and we need to remain
active to prevent complete political domination by them. The
following is a message from our Communications Committee. They
will give you some practical ways to speak out for the good
of all Americans.
We are
here to provide some of the information, guidance and good communication
necessary for political action.
Here is
a Table of Contents for the rest of this message:
1. One
political action group. An introduction to MoveonPAC.org
2. Democratic Party link for political action.
3. Suggestions for members who do not have
internet access
4. Guidelines for letters to editors
5. Addresses for editors and newspapers.
6. Guidelines for writing to elected officials.
7. Addresses and committee assignments show what
your officials are responsible for.
8. Committee assignments for all state and federal
legislators.
9. Contact information for your Barron County Democrats.
1.
An Introduction to MoveonPAC.org
MoveonPAC.org
reaches out to its members with the facts about the issues and
they back up their statements with credible references we can
read. They are passionate but sensible and offer a range of
different ways for us to become involved.
They offer
simple email petitions and letter-writing campaigns which we
can sign with a simple click of our computer mouse. We can add
our own comments to this type of petition if we wish. They also,
invite us to join their rallies and community building events.
Though these events require more effort than sending letters,
MoveonPAC.org provides plenty of support and guidelines for
us to get started.
2. Democratic Party Links for Political Action
The national
Democratic Party has its own internet area devoted to political
action. To see the direction they are taking and to learn what
you can do to help, visit http://democrats.org/action.html
3. Suggestions for Members Without Internet Access
Try out
internet access at your public library or senior center. There
is a lot of good information out there that can help you be
better informed and more active.
Computers
are cheaper than ever and so is internet access. These are both
worth another look even if you passed up computing opportunities
in the past.
If you
need help or instruction, your library, community college, high
school or senior center probably offers basic courses to help
you get started and connected.
Attend
our Democratic Party meetings the
third Thursday of each month. We intend to make these meetings
an even more valuable place to learn what is happening and what
to do about it. See the end of this letter for our meeting announcement.

Guidelines for Letters to Editors
Reference
a Recent Article: If possible, it is best to include a
reference to recent article that appeared in the newspaper you've
selected and then write your letter as a response, building
on what was printed or pointing out how your viewpoint isn't
included. This greatly increases the likelihood that your letter
will be printed.
Include
Your Contact Information: Most newspapers will only print
a letter to the editor after calling the author to verify his
or her identity and address. Newspapers will not give out that
information and will usually only print your name and city should
your letter be published.
Be
Clear and Concise: Keep your letters brief and to the point.
Newspaper editors often edit for length, so try to keep your
letter to less than 200 words. The shorter it is, the more likely
it will be printed.
State
Your Point Early: Be sure to state your main point in the
subject line and in the first sentence of the letter.
Keep
to One Topic: Keep your letters focused on one subject.

6. Guidelines for Writing to Elected Officials
Your letter
need not be long or elaborate. The fact that you have written
to your representative and given your opinion is enough. That
opinion will be considered and counted with all the others,
both for and against a particular issue.
Keep your
letter short and to the point.
Include
the area you live in so officials know that you are a potential
supporter.
If you
are happy with something a representative has done, we are sure
that he or she would appreciate a letter of support for all
their good work and strength.
