Barron County Courthouse auditorium
Chairman Cecil Kippenhan called the meeting to order
at 7:10 p.m. Thirty people attended.
Lizbeth
Ager gave the Secretary’s
report, and the minutes were approved as read.
Clarice
Fall gave the Treasurer’s report. February's ending balance
was $3,320.62. The box donation was $78.00 and a memorial came
to $15.00. Memberships totaled $438.00, and the state reimbursement
check totaled $115.00. Reimbursement to Edith Olson for flowers
for Blackie O’Brien’s family was $23.21, leaving
an ending balance of $3,735.71
State
Representative Mary Hubler and State Senator Robert Jauch both
attended the meeting, and each spoke briefly. Jauch reported
that even 30% of the GOP wants to vote for Doyle this year so
far, but urged us to work hard to send more Democrats to Madison
to defeat bad ideas such as TPA. He also offered a donation
toward renting a party HQ.
Mary Hubler
Congratulated Larry Nitz on his winning bid for Rice Lake City
Council, and cited a race in Waukesha in which a Democratic
teacher defeated a pro-TPA incumbent. “It portends well
for the Democrats in 2006.”
Old
business:
Members decided to have a silent auction at the 7th CD the following
Saturday, and the delegate list was reviewed.
Jerry
Schlei showed the video he made of the March
23rd march for Feingold in Spooner at the RNC event.
Fred Bannister
announced a new date for the Kreitlow
& Rasmus forum in Sioux Creek—October 14th.
Bannister
also announced the publication of his book, Health
Security America: Fixing the health care crisis, and
had a number on hand for sale. He showed the Chetek Alert article
about his efforts, and said that his fledgling coalition needs
volunteers, and he is seeking wider media coverage. Rep. Dave
Obey has given the most positive support so far.
New
business:
Linda Thompson reported that the old storefront used in 2004
is not available this season. She will continue the search for
a spot along Main Street Rice Lake and asks for suggestions.
Tom Richie suggested mailing out a request for headquarter funds.
Dar Ishmael suggested renting a small motor home.
Using
the database provided by the party, Harold Lindemann canvassed
Cumberland and signed up 11 new Democrats. He collected $1,115.00
from them and from independents who still wish to donate to
the Democratic cause. “It’s not work—it’s
fun!” Lindemann said.
Linda
Thompson made a motion for the party to fund the fair booth
rental this year. Seconded and passed.
Dar Ishmael
will procure custom balloons.
Communications
Committee report: Chair Jerry Schlei spojke more about
the neighborhood communicator program. The Executive Committee
and Communications Committee would have a joint meeting the
following Tuesday for a strategy session.
Officeholder
reports: Registrar of Deeds Joyce Kaseno resported hiring
her first full-time employee and satisfaction in realizing her
plans for changes in the office. She asked for the paty’s
help when she announced her candidacy for the office. She has
no announced opposition as yet.
Sheriff
Tom Richie reported that his department is doing well and described
the successful resolution of a hostage situation in Barron,
recently. He announced a joint conference with Wisconsin Attorney
General Peg Lautenschlager.
Candidate
report: Sheriff candidate John Postle reported that his
campaign is doing well and is gathering funds. He asked for
Democrats’ support.
There
was no sunshine report.
Food
pantry: the donations went to Cumberland for April, at
Edith Olson’s suggestion.
Linda
Thompson noted that the Rice Lake Chronotype ran a recent editorial
about global warming, and expressed appreciation. She said that
when we see editorials consonant with our values, we should
encourage them. It is also an example of a local issue that
Nate Franklin, the DNC field
officer, would like to know about and pass along to DPW and
DNC leadership.
Jerry
Schlei showed the new Kohl DVD for members.
The next
meeting will be held at the Rice Lake Library on May 18th, at
7:00 p.m.
