Rice Lake Public Library
Chairman Cecil Kippenhan called the meeting to order
at 7:00 p.m. Twenty-seven people attended.
Beth Ager
gave the Secretary’s
report, and the minutes were approved as read.
Clarice
Fall delivered the Treasurer’s report. December's
ending balance was $3,008.97. December's box donation was $39.00.
Memberships totaled $145.00, and the state co-pay totaled $17.50.
Reimbursement of expenses to Marge Lindeman was $22.00, and
the state's share of membership dues came to $192.50, leaving
an ending balance of $2,995.97.
Pat Kreitlow,
candidate for the 23rd Senate District, spoke about his
campaign. Education, health care and political reform motivated
him to seek office, and he asks for our “votes, volunteering
and donations--in reverse order.” This election season
promises to be nasty, divisive and competitive, and it will
no longer be enough just to vote. We must also organize and
get out the vote.
Old
business:
Chairman Kippenhan read a letter from Beth Ager thanking the
party for its support of her for the Registrar of Deeds vacancy,
and welcoming Joyce Kaseno, the new Registrar for Barron County.
Kaseno
estimated that the deeds office would not be up to speed until
February, since they needed to hire, yet, and move to another
part of the courthouse. She has been amazed at the media attention,
including a profile
by the Chetek Alert and an interview by WEAU. She thanked
everyone for the support, looks forward to the campaign and
hopes that she can count on the party’s support, adding
that she has been a long-time supporter of party activities.
The Chair
read a clipping about Jason
Rae’s journey to Israel and summarized the latest
Feingold Steering Committee meeting.
New
business:
Barron County hosts the 2006 7th Congressional District Convention
on April 22nd. The date was switched, and WITC Convention Center
is not available. Some possible venues are: Rice Lake Senior
Citizens’ Center, Sportsman’s Supper Club, the Masonic
Lodge, and Turtleback. Tom Richie will price the latter. Marlene
Raether, Clarice Fall and Katy Postle will form a committee
to launch the convention. Turnout was heavy in 2005 (~145).
The DPW
convention will be held June 9th and 10th in La Crosse. Barron
County may send 15-17 delegates.
Chairman
Kippenhan hopes that Governor Doyle can pay a visit for a fundraiser
or the 7th CD convention.
The DPW
is once again putting on the Democratic
Leadership Institute for activists, campaigners and candidates,
on April 29th and 30th.
Jim Heerey
and Fred Bannister met with Kreitlow and campaign manager to
plan a “Meet the Candidates” forum in southern Barron
County this spring.
Communications
Committee report: Jerry Schlei read a letter that will
be going out to likely candidates for “neighborhood communicator”
in the party’s new field organization. After the letter,
committee members will make contact by telephone to talk about
the voter registration drive and other items. The field organization
is so vital to Democratic goals that the communications committee
is asking the party to assume responsibility for the project.
Schlei requested a meeting with the board of officers to discuss
distributing tasks in order to minimize burnout.
Office
holders’ reports: Sheriff Tom Richie touched on resolving
the Registrar of Deeds case, returning budgeted money to the
general fund, thanks to department restructuring, and reducing
property crime rates. He mentioned new programs, such as a new
tribal liaison officer, funded by grant money. Richie has filed
intent to run papers, but is waiting until this spring to issue
a press release. Pat Moin asked if the Sheriff’s Dep’t.
has an accountant. Richie replied that accounting is done through
the administrator’s office by Jeff French.
Sunshine
report: Edith Olson requested to be notified of anyone
in need of sunshine.
Food
pantry report: Cameron sent thanks for December’s
donation. January’s will go to the Barron food shelf.
Candidates’
report: John Postle, candidate for sheriff, has his web
site up and asked members for feedback.
The next
meeting will take place on February 16th at 7:00 p.m. at the
Barron County Courthouse auditorium.
8:20:
Curt Collins motioned to adjourn, with Hugo Harbers seconding.
Respectfully
submitted,
Lizbeth Ager
