Oct. 18th.
Old business:
Rep. Mary Hubler asked for volunteers to coordinate literature
drops in the major municipalities of Barron County, to be done
between October 28th and November 5th, coordinating with other
Democrats’ campaigns as well.
The pig
roast is on for 10-21, at the fairgrounds, from 2–4
p.m. Governor Doyle, Herb Kohl and Kathleen Falk are confirmed
speakers, with other area representatives invited as well. Tom
Richie, who is coordinating the pig roast, reported spending
$886 on the newspaper ad, $60 on postcards, and has arranged
for the hogs, beans and other menu items, with support from
volunteer cooks and bakers.
New business:
The Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Rice Lake asked the
party for a donation. Members decided to table the issue until
after the election.
Sioux Creek Forum coordinators Jim Heerey and Fred Bannister
mailed 500 invitations to voters in the four municipalities
in the 23rd Senate and 67th Assembly districts. They only used
half their budget of $400, and agreed to contribute the remainder
to the pig roast.
Spooner Democrats are screening Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient
Truth” at the Palace Theater on October 14th. Dave Obey
will introduce the film, and have a reception at the Rice Lake
HQ afterward. Rodney Dahl stated that Gore’s movie is
powerful and convincing.
Obey will also have a reception at Lehman’s on October
28th and a series of events with Mary Hubler on October 18th.
Phone banking at NUE: Either the DPW or Dave Obey will
pay for the cost of the phone banking effort. Dee Taylor will
notify us of the times after the next NUE meeting.
Communications committee report: Chair Jerry Schlei
announced that he felt that the committee had [run] its [cour]se
and he would be stepping down. He suggested that the party organize
around the ideas Judy Ferber and Willie Williams brought back
from Camp Wellstone, forging links to [progressive] community
groups, field candidates for local elections and otherwise keep
a higher Democratic profile in Barron County than the party
ordinarily does between elections.
Officeholder
reports: Registrar of Deeds Joyce Kaseno reports a smooth
campaign. She has scheduled a “Family FunNight”
at the deeds office Octobr 17th to educate the public about
what her office does, including genealogy searches.
Mary Hubler will have her election-night party at Turtleback,
starting at 8:00 p.m. It will coincide with that of Sheriff
Tom Richie. All lit-droppers welcome to attend.
Sunshine report: Edith Olson sent a sympathy card to
the family of Lucille Zabel.
John Banks asked Democrats to stay involved in the party following
the election, and to prepare now for 2008. He advised recruiting
people for elections large and small.
Linda Thompson recommended that the party coordinate its members’
LTE efforts rather than risk saturation in local papers.
Food pantry: Cumberland sent a note of thanks for the
donations. October’s donations went to Chetek.
The next meeting of Barron Democrats will be in the Friendship
room of the Rice Lake Public Library at 7:00 p.m. on November
16th.
